Submission Policies

SECTION I

General Submission Policies

  • The editors reserve the right to determine the suitability of submissions. For detailed technical and formatting requirements, please consult our Submission Guidelines page.
  • Submissions are reviewed anonymously under a strict double-blind process.
  • The journal does not charge any article processing charges (APCs) or article submission charges.
  • The journal does not use plagiarism checking software to screen submissions.

SECTION II

Removal & Revising Work

Important Notice: Once published, a journal article cannot generally be revised or removed. We believe it is vital to provide perpetual and dependable access to academic materials published within eScholarship whenever possible and appropriate.

Exceptions for Removal: Publications may only be removed under special circumstances, including verifiable submission errors, rights violations, or inappropriate content. Even after the formal removal of a text, a bibliographic citation to the paper will remain permanently in our system along with its persistent URL.

If you would like to request that your work be removed from eScholarship, please contact the BUJ Staff Advisor directly at submitbuj@berkeley.edu.

Revising Work: Once manuscripts are published, we are generally unable to revise them. If a significant error or critical omission is discovered after publication, please contact the editors.

SECTION III

Rights & Permissions

The Berkeley Undergraduate Journal does not require copyright transfer, only permission to publish and archive the article.

Copyright holders retain copyright ownership, granting a nonexclusive license to the journal and eScholarship to publish the article. This means that the author may also publish it elsewhere, provided that they cite BUJ as the place of first publication.

Before submitting an article to the journal, please be sure that all necessary copyright permissions have been cleared for any third-party material (including images, figures, charts, and tables).

* All articles published in the journal are subject to the journal’s author agreement, which is accessible during the first step of the eScholarship submission process or upon request.

SECTION IV

Open Access Statement

This is a fully open access journal, meaning that all content is freely available without charge to the user or their institution. Users are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or author.

Starting in 2024, all content in the journal is published under the
Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) license.

SECTION V

Long-term Preservation Policy

All materials submitted and accepted via eScholarship are automatically deposited in the California Digital Library’s
Merritt Preservation Repository, guaranteed for long-term digital preservation and perpetual academic availability.
